You may have seen the downtown area of Canton in movies such as, A Time to Kill, My Dog Skip, and O' Brother Where Art Thou? Incorporated in 1836, Canton serves as the County Seat of Madison County. Located just 20 miles North of Jackson, Canton is convenient to the entire Jackson Metro Area.
The Canton Courthouse Square District was entered into the National Register of Historic Places. The Greek Revival courthouse was built around 1855 and has had several renovations. The Courthouse Square District is the host to the Canton Flea Market in May and October each year. This event is a magnet to shoppers from all over the Southeast. During the Christmas Season, the Victorian Christmas Festival offers family-style entertainment. The Square is alive with thousands of lights and decorations. There are old-fashioned carousel rides and activities for the entire family. The festival received honorable mention from the Arts & Entertainment Network's 2003 contest, "Best Small Town Christmas Spirit."
Canton Public Schools, separate from the Madison County Schools, recently completed the Canton Public High School, which offers Football, basketball, track and boxing. There are also Private and Parochial schools in the area.
Canton's residential areas are a blend of carefully restored older homes with new modern homes to fit today's modern family. With the opening of the Nissan plant, Canton has enjoyed growth in housing within the city and surrounding area of Madison County. The Nissan Automotive Assembly Plant was opened in 2003 and also produces many Nissan and Infinity products. The plant has an annual production capacity of approximately 400,000 vehicles.
