Florence was originally named Steen's Creek when the area was settled by the Steen Family from South Carolina. Mrs. Steen and her sons came to Mississippi in the early 1820's. By1900 Steen's Creek was a thriving cotton center with stores, a blacksmith shop, a grist mill, a steam cotton gin, and a hotel.
